Cinema has a way of freezing a single frame so it never leaves you. This painting works the same way.
The composition is tightly cropped and wide, like a film still: two pale blue eyes drifting up and away, a face gone slack, a smear of blood at one nostril. Dark bangs fall like a curtain across the top, and the hair on either side sinks into near-black. The skin is built from cool rose and cream, with warm rust-brown passages under the eyes that read as shadow, fatigue, and bruising all at once.
The handling is soft and blended in the face and loose and bristly in the hair, with bare canvas showing at the edges. It’s an unsettling, beautifully painted moment, and a painting that holds its ground on a wall.
