The turned-away figure is one of the oldest ideas in painting, and one of the most intimate. Without a face to meet, the viewer is invited in rather than looked at.
A woman stands with her back to us, short blonde hair falling across her brow, head bowed in soft profile. Light slides across the shoulder blade and down the spine, shifting from cool pearl to warm amber in the shadows. A pale drape gathers at her hips, painted in cool whites and sea-glass greens.
Behind her, the background is a single confident gesture of teal, viridian, and turquoise, scrubbed on with a loaded brush so that the canvas weave and a few drips remain visible. The contrast between the softly modeled flesh and the energetic ground is what makes the painting hum.
