A figure stands composed and quiet, long auburn hair spilling over her shoulders, a thin black choker at her throat. Warm, coppery light rakes across one arm and the side of her hair, while the rest of the body cools into soft violet-gray tones. The face is painted loosely, more suggestion than detail, so the mood comes through the pose and the light rather than a specific expression.
Behind her, broad swaths of black and raw umber are scrubbed across the canvas, leaving bare white weave and vertical drips along the edges. The contrast between the carefully modeled figure and the unfiltered, gestural ground is the heart of the piece.
