Portraiture has always had its dignified subjects: saints, aristocrats, poets. This one is eating wings.
A young woman glances sideways, caught mid-bite, sauce on her lips and cheek, fingers still gripping the bone. The face is painted with care and restraint, in soft ivory tones, delicate liner, and a single bright glint in the eye. The wing is the opposite: thick, glossy, almost sculptural strokes of amber, rust, and near-black that look as sticky as the real thing.
That contrast is the point. The old language of the portrait meets the real language of a good night out, with no napkin in sight. Ochre washes, scrubbed edges, and amber drips over raw canvas finish the piece with the same warmth and mess as the subject.
